Thanks. Weight is about 3,7kg and diameter 81,5cm. I have also shield made from aspen with birch burl boss, it haves about same diameter, maybe slightly more, and its not only rimmed, but also faced with leather.

Really nice construction and looks quite strong.
The tar looks really nice. Gives it a really nice color

Beatiful work! Should't it have a canvas or leather facing, though? I assume you're familiar with Hurstwic.com?

All viking age shields didn't have any facing, some had. I have another shied with leather facing and wooden boss, which were also used back then. I know hurstwic.

Very nice work! It's great to se a shield of accurate dimensions. All to often you see far to small shields.

Thanks. I have noticed that too, and often you can see far too large shield bosses also.

Thickness of the steel is 3 millimeter. It is enough for low boss like that. For higher boss i would possibly use 4 millimeter steel.

this one looks great, how did you forge the boss?

Thanks. First i did cut the round disk from the steel. Then I heated the steel in forge and hammered it on the duct, so that the boss stretched to the hole. I had to heat it many times. When the boss was somehow shape I finished the hammering on the anvil.

I hope that you understand, my english is not too good :D
